The Rock Creek, Camas Creek and Fort Logan Ranches were used on all hunts this season.

We had 13 archery hunters this fall. Joby Matthias did the cooking and camp duties. Dustin Schell, Garrett Jobe and I did the guiding.

The first archery hunt was on September 4 - 9. Dale Zahradka of ND and Brent Strickler of MN were our guests for the week. This was Dale and Brent's second hunt with us.

Temperatures ranged from 90 degrees during the day to 30 degrees at night, with no precipitation throughout the week.

The third morning Dale passed on a 5 point bull at 20 yards that came to a cow call in Calamity. That evening Dale collected a beautiful, long tined 6 point bull at 20 steps out of the Hole in the Wall tree stand. The fourth evening Brent connected on a very large, heavy beamed 8x7 bull at 44 paces out of a tree stand in Calamity. Dale passed on a whitetail buck in Elk Creek. The fifth morning Dale missed a nice drop tined whitetail buck in Elk Creek.

During the second archery hunt, September 11-16, Doug and Janet Rehak of PA and Pat Delany and Tom Kuechly of OH joined us for the week. Janet accompanied Doug as an observer. This was Doug's twelfth hunt on the ranches.

We had hot, dry weather early in the week. Daytime highs were in the 80's, nights dropped to the 40's. It cooled off later in the week with some rain showers.

On Sunday evening Tom harvested a dark maned 6x5 point bull out of a tree stand on Freemon at 34 yards. On Monday morning Pat had an opportunity on a very large bull in Calamity but was unable to fill his tag.

Doug had a nice 6 point bull at 25 steps in Dry Range. The bull did not present a shot and eventually winded him. On Tuesday morning Tom filled his tags with a long tined 5 point whitetail at 45 paces in Elk Creek. Doug collected a nice, odd tined 6x5 bull at 28 yards that came to a cow call on Freemon. That evening Pat had a nice 6 point bull at 15 steps in Beaver Creek, but the bull did not offer a good shot. Wednesday morning Pat passed on 2 bulls in Beaver Creek. That evening Doug made an excellent 40 yard shot on a dark horned 5 point whitetail on the High Bar of Camas Creek. Pat passed on a 6 point bull bugled up in Beaver Creek.

Pat Garman and Mike Gilbreath of OK and Rich Snapper of CA were our guests for the third archery hunt September 18-23. This was Pat and Mike's third hunt with us.

The first two days of the hunt were cooler with rain and wind. During the last 4 days, daytime temperatures reached 70 degrees with night time lows in the 30's.

On the first morning Mike passed on a 6 point bull bugled up to 25 steps in Long Park. That evening Pat missed a difficult shot on a very large 7x6 point bull in Beaver Creek.

The second morning Pat passed on a 6 point bull in the Black Forest. That evening he passed on two bulls at 10 and 30 paces that came to a cow call in the Hill Field. On the third morning Rich passed on a 5 point bull called up in Lower Indian. Mike harvested a very nice dark horned, symmetrical 6 point bull bugled up to 20 yards in upper Long Park. That evening Rich had some tough luck on a nice bull out of a tree stand in the upper clear cuts of Indian. On the fifth evening Pat connected on a heavy, long tined 8x7 bull called in to 41 steps in Long Park. Rich made an excellent shot on a hard earned 6 point bull at 23 paces bugled up in Calamity.

The fourth archery hunt was September 25-30. Don Sr., Don and Rick Ellingsen, Jim Cahill, Marty Long and Joe Via, all of WA, were our guests for the week. Don Sr., Marty and Joe accompanied as observers. This was Don's eighth and Rick's seventh hunt on the ranches.

It was warm and sunny early in the week with highs in the mid 90's. Mid week temperatures dropped to 70 degrees during the day and 30 degrees at night. We had some difficult, shifting winds but no precipitation throughout the hunt.

On Sunday morning Rick passed on a 6 point bull bugled up to 15 yards east of the Hole in the Wall. Jim missed a large 6 point bull that came to a cow call in upper Long Park. Tuesday evening Don collected a large bodied 6 point bull at 15 steps out of a tree stand in the upper clear cuts of Indian Creek. On Wednesday morning Rick had a nice 7x6 bull bugled up to 30 paces in the upper end of Long Park, but the bull did not offer a clean shot.

Jim made an excellent shot on a nice, wide 6x5 bull at 23 yards that came to a cow call on Yellow Pine Ridge. Early Friday morning Rick filled his elk tag with a hard earned 7x6 bull. The bull came up to within 30 steps to a cow call in lower Indian.

During the last archery hunt of the season, October 2-7, John and Ben Vinych of ND, and Dan Maksimik of PA joined us for the week. Ben accompanied John as an observer. This was John's second hunt with us.

Early in the week daytime highs reached 80 degrees with nights dropping to 40 degrees. We had rain, fog, and cooler temperatures for the last 3 days of the hunt.
The first morning Dan passed on a broken horned 6 point bull in Jug Gulch. Later in the morning he was very close to a 5 point bull but the bull did not present a clean shot. John had a close encounter with a large bull in Long Park but the bull didn't offer a shot.

That evening Dan collected a heavy, broken horned 6x5 bull at 20 paces out of a tree stand on Freemon. On the second evening John had an opportunity on a very large bull near the Pole Patch but was unable to fill his tag. His bad luck continued on another nice 6 point that came within range later in the evening. The third evening John made an excellent 20 yard shot on a magnificent, long tined 6x5 bull in lower Calamity.

We glassed and hunted a lot of great bulls again this year. Everyone hunted hard, looked at a lot of beautiful elk country, and had a great time.

Terry Hansen of WA joined us for an antelope hunt on October 18-19. He harvested a heavy horned 15" antelope at 180 steps on the Fort Logan Ranch. This was Terry's seventeenth hunt on the ranches.

Guides for the rifle season were Sid McMillin, Dustin Schell, Garrett Jobe and myself. Sandy Grigsby covered the cooking and camp duties.

The first rifle hunt of the season was October 23-28. Guests for the week were Pat O'hara Sr, Mark Tisdal, Patrick O'hara, and Robert O'hara, all of OK, and Mike Whitney of WA.

We had cool weather with rain, snow, and wind early in the hunt. It was sunny and mild the last 4 days of the week with daytime highs in the 50's and lows reaching the 20's at night.

On Sunday morning Mike connected on a nice 6 point bull at 143 yards in upper Long Park. Monday morning Mike finished his hunt with a heavy beamed 5 point whitetail buck at 85 steps in Middle Creek. Patrick made a nice shot on a heavy, long tined 7x6 bull at 180 paces on Freemon. Mark also collected a large bodied 6 point bull at 185 yards out of the same bunch of elk. That evening Robert had an opportunity on a large 6 point in Long Park, but the bull prevailed.

On Wednesday morning Pat missed a nice bull in the Ramsey. That evening he connected on a dark horned, symmetrical 6 point bull at 150 steps in the Ramsey. On Thursday evening Robert was within 250 paces of 3 bulls in the Dry Range, but the bulls never offered a good shot and eventually fed into the timber.

During the second rifle hunt, October 30 through November 4, hunters were Pete and Krista Perry of ME, Lance Barber of FL, Adam Kibel of NY, and Tom Nault of MA. This was Pete's second hunt with us.

The weather was cool and windy with scattered snow and rain showers early in the week. Later in the week temperatures reached the 50's during the day and dropped into the 20's at night.

The first morning Adam made an excellent shot on a nice 6 point bull at 131 yards in upper Indian Creek. Pete harvested a high tined 6x5 mule deer at 65 steps in Middle Creek. Later in the morning Krista connected on a wide, symmetrical 5 point mulie at 110 paces in Middle Creek. That evening Tom filled his elk tag with a wide, dark horned 6 point bull at 150 yards on Freemon. On the second morning Pete collected a beautiful, heavy beamed 6 point bull at 300 steps in Leo's Place. That evening Lance passed up two bulls at 50 paces on Freemon.

The third morning Lance missed a difficult shot at a 6 point bull in Indian Creek. That evening Tom filled his tags with a heavy, dark horned 6x5 whitetail in lower Rock Creek at 200 yards. On the fourth morning Lance made an excellent shot on a wide, long tined 6x5 bull at 191 steps in Leo's Place.

Richard and Shane Lutz of PA, Jerome Link of IA, Buck Steenwyk of CA, and Eric Hutton of MI were our guests for the third rifle hunt, November 6-11. This was Richard's 3rd hunt and Jerome and Buck's 4th hunt on the ranches.

This week brought mild, windy weather with daytime highs in the 50's and night time lows in the 30's. We had no snow cover or precipitation during this hunt.

On Sunday morning Buck made a long stalk and harvested a wide, thick framed 4 point mulie buck at 200 yards in Middle Creek. That evening Buck finished his hunt with a large, broken beamed 6 point bull at 60 steps in Middle Creek. Shane had some bad luck on a very large 6 point bull in upper Long Park. On Monday morning Jerome collected a beautiful deep forked 5 point mule deer at 150 paces on Leo's Place. After a long, exciting stalk Eric connected on a nice 5x4 bull at 80 yards in Long Park. On Tuesday morning Eric had a couple of opportunities on nice antelope bucks in the Clear Range but the bucks prevailed. He made an excellent shot that evening on a dark faced 13" antelope buck at 200 steps on the Fort Logan Ranch.

Wednesday morning Jerome finished his hunt with a nice 5x4 bull at 80 paces in the upper Dry Range. Thursday morning Richard connected on a hard earned 5 point bull at 50 yards in the Dry Range. Eric harvested a high horned 5 point whitetail buck at 180 steps out of a tree stand on Camas Creek. On Friday evening Shane had a close encounter with a cow elk in the Black Forest but was unable to fill his elk tag.

On the fourth rifle hunt of the season, November 13-18, guests were Skip Slavin and Chris Langer of WA, Gerry, Bob, and Larry Tadina of CA, and Danny Beasley of NC. This was Bob and Gerry's 5th hunt and Danny's 2nd hunt with us.

Three days of heavy snowfall, cold windy weather, and poor visibility made conditions very challenging during this hunt. 18" of new snow covered the higher elevations of the ranches. Temperatures reached 20 degrees during the day with nights dropping to -10 degrees.

On the first afternoon Danny collected a heavy beamed 5 point mulie buck at 100 paces in the Ramsey. On the third evening Larry made an excellent shot on a nice 5 point bull at 135 yards in the Dry Range. Danny worked on a 6 point bull on the BLM Ridge but the bull winded him before he was able to shoot. The fourth morning Bob had an opportunity on a nice 5 point bull in the Dry Range but the bull prevailed.

That evening Gerry connected on a symmetrical 5 point bull at 330 steps in the Black Forest. Skip filled his deer tag with a nice 5 point mule deer at 80 paces in the upper Dry Range. On the fifth morning Chris made an excellent shot on an odd tined 6x5 bull at 250 yards in the Dry Range. That evening Larry finished his hunt with a nice 5x4 whitetail at 60 steps on Camas Creek. Danny filled his elk tag on a hard earned, heavy beamed 5 point bull at 250 paces in the upper Dry Range. On Friday evening Skip missed a difficult shot in blizzard conditions at a bull in the Clear Range.

Terry Hansen and Lee Barkie of WA, Mark Zschoche of CA, Cory Zschoche of OR, and Tom Sr. and Tom Zschoche of KS joined us for the fifth and final rifle hunt for the season, November 20-25. This was Terry's 18th hunt on the ranches.

The weather was beautiful and mild throughout the week. Daytime highs reached 40 degrees with night time lows dropping into the 20's. The ranches had 12" of snow on the ground at the beginning of this hunt.

On Sunday morning after a long stalk Tom Jr. harvested a nice 5 point bull at 280 yards in the top of Middle Creek. Cory filled his deer tag with a nice 5x4 whitetail at 75 steps on Rock Creek. That afternoon Lee passed on a 4 point mulie buck at Leo's. Terry passed on a group of 5 bulls that fed by him on the rim above the Ramsey. On Monday morning Tom Jr. finished his hunt with a beautiful, heavy horned 5 point mule deer in the Ramsey. Lee collected a very nice, heavy beamed 6 point bull at 300 yards in the Clear Range. That evening Mark made an excellent shot on a 5 point bull at 80 steps in lower Indian. Lee finished his hunt with a long tined 4 point whitetail shot at 220 paces at Soldiers Lake.

On Tuesday evening Terry connected on a beautiful, dark horned 6 point bull at 60 yards in the Dry Range. Cory finished his hunt with a hard earned 5x4 bull at 50 steps east of the Black Forest. On Wednesday morning Mark harvested a symmetrical 4 point whitetail at 90 paces on Camas Creek. On Thursday evening Tom Sr. had a bull at 250 yards in the Clear Range. The bull never presented a clean shot and ended up winding them. On Friday morning Tom Sr. collected a hard earned 4 point whitetail at 150 steps on the Low Bar. Terry missed a difficult shot on a large whitetail on the High Bar of Camas Creek. Saturday morning Terry made an excellent shot on a long beamed, high tined 4 point whitetail behind the Fort Logan Ranch.

I would like to thank everyone who hunted with us this season. Your business, friendship, and loyalty are most appreciated. Weather conditions were ideal for most of the season. Everyone put in a hard effort, made the best of conditions at hand, and was a pleasure to hunt with.

2012 Hunting Information

In 2012 17,000 licenses will be sold to non-resident hunters through a drawing process. You can apply for your license directly on line. We will also send applications by mail to booked and deposited hunters around January 20 if you prefer. Applications need to be filled out, and with license fee enclosed, mailed back to the Fish, Wildlife and Parks State Office in Helena, before the March 15 deadline.

*If you are unsuccessful in the license drawing, your deposit will be refunded in full immediately.

2012 Big Game Combination Elk/Deer License
$944.00 - (March 15th deadline). Starting in 2012, Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks will use a preference point system in the non-resident General Elk License drawing. 75% of the 17,000 total non-resident general elk tags will be issued to hunters with one or more preference points. Preference point cost is $50 per point.
